For Nothing Is Hidden: Masculinities and Trauma in Church and Theology

In a church and a world riven with scandals of abuse and violence, often committed by men, there is an urgent need to delve deeper into the topics of the masculinities and trauma that define them. Both critical theologies of masculinities and trauma theologies have a shared aim: to reveal that which is hidden, to name and bring to light those things that are so often concealed. This collection seeks to uncover an intersection between the two, showing how masculinities and trauma intersect and influence each other in research, stories and experiences of church and theology. Spanning colonialism and ecology, through eucharistic theology and models of ministry, For Nothing is Hidden draws together voices from a variety of disciplines and experiences to offer research and reflections, with chapters from Karen O’Donnell, Katie Cross, Andrew Graystone, Carlton Turner and Isabelle Hamley, plus a foreword from the Bishop of Newcastle, Helen-Ann Hartley. If the Church begins to take seriously the ways in which masculinities are produced and shaped, and how trauma can be experienced and understood, then there is an opportunity to offer a helpful contribution to the Church’s contemporary conversations concerning abuse, safeguarding and violence, with specific attention to gender.
